MENS 1s DRAW
By Ross Harrington
Men's 1s hold top of the league.
The Men's 1s took on top of the league Bridgwater and became the first side this season to take points away from the visitors with a well deserved 2-2 draw.
Games between these two sides have been very fiery in recent seasons and this was no different, with green cards, yellow cards, goals and plenty of end-to-end action.
Bridgwater started the better of the 2 sides and despite a few short corners against them, managed take the lead with a decent finish - a half-volley buried into the corner.
Gryphons earned themselves a few more short corners, but just couldn't convert them. With 5 minutes of the first half left, they won another and Rodney Phillips bagged his 5th goal of the season firing the ball between the keepers legs.
1-1 at half time.
Gryphons came out and dominated the second half. With all the possession, short corner after short corner and chance after chance, they were looking like the side sat top of the league, but just couldn't find a way past the opposition keeper who played a blinder.
Gryphons kept plugging away and with 10 minutes to go finally managed to take the lead. Oli Carlier finished off a great right hand flank move with a finish that saw him chip the onrushing keeper. 2-1 Gryphons.
With 3 minutes to go, Bridgwater won a short corner of their own - one of very few in comparison to the home side. Although brilliantly defended initially, the ball found its way onto a Gryphons foot and with the second, they managed to find the backboard with a decent strike to tie it up at 2-2.
One final counter attack in the last minute saw Chris Tomlinson wriggle his way past the last defender and into the D, only for the umpire to blow his whistle for the end of the game! Who knows what would have happened, but in the end a 2-2 draw with top of the league is a fantastic result and means the team are the only unbeaten side left in the division.
